OPP - Nutrition Care For Patient with Hypertension

The theme for World Hypertension Day 2009 that initiated by World Hypertension League, was entitled “Salt and High Blood Pressure: Two Silent Killers. Get Informed, Live Long”. This strengthened the positive relationship between salt and high blood pressure in killing humankind silently. To your knowledge, a multi-cultural country like Malaysia is a potpourri of exotic cuisines. As a result, we as Malaysians are exposed to various kind of foods that are high in salt or sodium content. For instance, all kind of fast foods, salted fish, soy sauce, instant noodles, salted nuts, stock cubes, cheese, pickles and other processed foods. Let’s take a minute to ask yourselves about these few questions.

Did you know that sodium or salt is the major factor putting up blood pressure? Did you know that high blood pressure or hypertension is the global silent killer in humankind? How much do you know about this chronic disease? Although people are more health-conscious now, but there are still many individuals are taking pride in the foods and delicacies without any awareness of the bad consequences. However, I believe this is still timely as we need to consider the link between sodium and hypertension, and ways to control it.

Our very honorable nutritionist, Mr Heng had delivered a talk on a topic which entitled “Nutrition Care for Patient with Hypertension” on 6th July 2009 (Monday). He first clarified some scientific terms which relates to hypertension, and these terms seemed to be the ones which are always misused by people nowadays. In addition, he also explained to the facts and causes of hypertension to the audiences, followed by the ways of controlling hypertension. He mentioned that if we consume too much sodium, this will render a condition where the osmosis process, vitality of red blood cells in our body distorted, thus opens doors for the development of all kinds of complications in our body, such as kidney diseases, diabetes and strokes.

Bananas, a food which contains significant amount of potassium, are highly recommended by doctors for patients whose potassium content is low with suitable per serving size. Before he ended his talk, he stressed again that control of sodium intake is only one of the many methods in hypertension management. Furthermore, we should always remember to exercise regularly, maintain a healthy weight, refrain from smoking, and last but not least, go for regular medical checkups. All audiences are greatly benefited after listening to the talk.

GTF Worldwide Sdn Bhd had developed a new marketing strategies plan recently. In order to further enhance the understanding of their members for this new plan, Mr Hugo Lim, the crown manager of the company had been very considerate and delivered a talk on this new marketing plan with the purpose to clarify others on how to utilize this strategic plan to gain more profits out of it. Lastly, the night ended with a motivation song by all the audiences.
